Personal space communicates personal traits. People unconsciously reflect their personality on the spaces that they own. Therefore, one’s desk can tell many things about the person: what the one likes, what the one is obsessed with, jinx, etc. While showing their personality in their space, some common denominators are shown in their spaces.
In this project, I explored desks of people in different fields, ages, and genders. What they put and where they put objects on their desks show people’s areas of activities, views, and behavior patterns. In this project, I divided the view and the position into 3 steps of cubes. The overall project shows the use of personal space with various visuals.
Design Process
01 Collect Visual References of Desk Spaces
First, I asked my friends to take a photo of their desks without touching anything to clean them or organize them. This was to see how they organize their desk space unconsciously so I can see the things they often use and know how they organize them in their system. In my opinion, the desk shows a lot of things about a person. It shows what the owner of the desk likes, and what they use every day. I collected the photos of the desks and started to build the system of how I’ll interpret them with design.
02 Build the System
First, I marked the spaces and kinds of objects with the same size of rectangles in the front view. I sketched the places of all objects two-dimensionally.
Then, I came up with some other factors that I wanted to show in my design. I also added the amount of time that the desk owner spendonor each objecs and marked them in circles. Also, I tried to show the space three-dimensionally.
So, I divided the space into three levels. The lowest level is the place where our arms and hands go. The second level is the level where we should look down to see the objects. The highest level is the area where we don’t have to look down to see the objects. Usually, TsV, computer monit,sor and mirrors are located on this level.
