I worked as a Graphic Design Intern at CEDU Book from December 2022 to January 2023. The first project that I did was to design the textbook cover for the 2024|3142 series. 2024|3142 series are English textbooks for the Korean SAT and are composed of the most difficult problems.
The company wanted to redesign the textbook cover that match the new contents that they have and wanted the design to reflect the preferences of students and English teachers. I planned the design direction on my own at the beginning of the project and worked with the marketing team staff while designing the cover.

These were the initial design for the covers with the concepts that I introduced.
Direction 01 | Deep Ocean
03 Revised Design
After getting feedback from the Design Team Manager and marketing team staff, I revised the design direction and revised the designs for the cover.
They asked to have brighter or contrasted colors for the design and make the title more visible.
04 Final Design Outcome
After several meetings with the marketing team, I revised the designs again and replaced the background image with a simplified image, and scaled up the title to make it more visible. Also, I added the arrows that I made for the second revised design. I also worked on the typography of the title.
• Partial Emphasis: The 2024 3142 series is composed of specific types of problems, so I wanted to show that this textbook has selected types of problems.
• Rise: Since this textbook’s objective is to let students solve difficult problems more easily and increase their text score, the last concept that I came up with was ‘Rise’.
With the 3 design concepts, I sketched the thumbnails of the design first and then started to design them using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Indesign.
Direction 02 | Part and Emphasis
I revised kept deep ocean and rise design concept and came up with the stairs and division concept this time.
The deep ocean cover got the highest votes, and I finalized the cover design and the illustrations that are going to be used inside the cover.
Direction 03 | Rising
First, I analyzed the 2024 3142 Textbook’s concept and objective. The textbook is mainly about difficult types of problems that have been on the English exam of Korea’s SAT. The researchers analyze the selected types of questions and help students develop analysis ability. These are for the highest-ranking students who are aiming for higher scores in the English exam Korea’s SAT.
Based on the concept of the textbook, I came up with 3 kinds of design concepts.
• Deep Ocean: At the time, lots of mass media showed their technical skills in computer graphics by showing the deep ocean. Since this textbook’s objective is to let students grow problem-solving abilities and be familiar with difficult problems, I use the sed deep ocean as a metaphor.
